At just over 50.000 years old, Australia is one of the youngest nations on this planet. As strange as it sounds, Australia is the only country that is both an island and continent with a population of approximately 22 million. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It's about the same size as the 48 mainland states of the USA and 50 per cent larger than Europe, but has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre. It’s coastline stretches almost 50,000 kilometres and is linked by over 10,000 beaches, more than any other country in the world. Majority of the country's population has settled along the eastern and south eastern coastal strip, making it an intergral part of the laid-back lifestyle. Australia is an independent Western democracy, known for it’s diverse multicultural society with over six million settlers from almost 200 nations. Four out of ten Australians are migrants or the first-generation children of migrants, half of them from non-English speaking backgrounds. The country is divided into six states and two territories; namely New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Sydney  | Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, the oldest settlement in Australia. This thriving metropolis of 4.3 million people is the economic heart of the country. Sydney is most notably known for the iconic Sydney Opera House, which is famous around the world for its unique architecture and beautiful setting by the harbor. As the oldest city in Australia, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to markets, museums, restaurants, shopping, and exciting nightlife. This is definitely a city that will keep you on your feet. | Melbourne  | As the capital city of Victoria, Melbourne is known as a great world city, which brings together a diverse population of 3.8 million offering a richness of different cultures from the Greek quarter around Lonsdale Street, Italian in Lygon street, Vietnamese in Victoria Street to the Chinese culture in Chinatown and the upmarket Paris End of Collins Street. Embrace yourself in Melbourne’s cosmopolitan pulse, with chic boutiques, buzzing cafés and bars, immaculate gardens and hosting world class sporting events including the Australian Open Tennis and Formula One racing. The city is easy to navigate with Melbourne’s many public transport systems – trams, trains, buses, and taxis. That’s why this city has been voted most liveable city in the world on numerous occassions. | Perth  | The "Friendly City" as Perth is know as the capital of Western Australia and has a population of 1.5 million. With the most hours of sunshine than any other Australian city, it is no wonder how easily one can be captivated by Perth’s beautiful beaches. There are also plenty of outdoor activities for nature lovers to soak in the sun. With just a short drive, you can escape Perth’s modern feel and indulge yourself in the historic port city of Fremantle. Perth offers an exciting location for those who seek both modern living yet enjoys quick escapes to historic charm. | Brisbane  | Brisbane is the capital city of the ‘Sunshine State’, Queensland. It’s a city full of energy, style, arts and culture. The Brisbane River snakes through the metropolis and is peppered with alfresco dining options. By night, the city comes alive with vibrant bars and lives music venues to keep you entertained. Brisbane is also the perfect hub to explore the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, only an hour away by road. Although, with a small population of over 200,000 there are plenty of great restaurants, cafes and hip bars for you to enjoy the youth culture whilst appreciating the history of this heritage city. | Darwin  | If you want a great Aussie outback experience, you’ll find it in Darwin! The city itself is a cosmopolitan with charming bars and cafes, whilst conveniently located for easy travelling Alice Springs and Ayers Rock for the ultimate outback adventure. It’s been said to be the most laid-back city in Australia as the city is balanced by the natural surroundings. As one of the smaller cities in Australia, it has its advantages being that you can get to everywhere quickly. Everything in Darwin is only 20 minutes drive away. | Canberra  | Australia’s capitial city Canberra is located in the Australian Capital Territory, which is surrounded by New South Wales. There is so much history in Canberra with national museums, gallaries and institutions where you can visit to learn about the Australian culture, history and national achievements. Other city attractions include wineries, natural landscape and great shopping to keep you entertained in Australia’s capital city. |
